Idiom of the day: Redewendung des Tages:

“To keep a clean slate” means to start over without prejudice or considering past mistakes, providing a fresh chance to begin again. It can also mean to maintain a clear conscience by not having any past wrongs or offences that need to be accounted for.

Sample Sentence:

“Once a criminal has been released from prison, they must keep a clean slate for a specified number of months/years, otherwise they might go straight back into prison.”

NOTE: A clean slate was often used in public houses when a regular customer could buy a drink and pay for it the next time they had money. A piece of slate (Schieferplatte) and chalk would be used by the publican/landlord/lady to record the amount that the regular customer had built up over a certain period of time. Once the bill was paid, the publican/landlord/lady would get a cloth and wipe away the amount of money that was owed, thus making their slate clean.
