The phrase ‘Better Late than Never‘ means that doing something late is better than not doing it at all.

The TA” = the Territorial Army – a weekend army. The TA consists of ‘all walks of life‘ = banks, engineers, shop assistants, doctors, students, lorry drivers, almost anyone in society. This is a very English thing to do, that is, to have a weekend army of people who volunteer to play at being real soldiers.

The TA is almost exactly like the professional army as it has the same equipment, ranks etc. It just meets at weekends and gets paid for ‘working‘ at the weekend and they also go on ‘manoeuvres’ from time to time.

To call them up” / a letter from the Government to say come into the “Regular Army”. in “Civvy Street” = Civilian life. In my “Civvies” – in my normal clothes and not my uniform.
